Confirmation and emphasis

The ね particle

The particle comes at the end of a sentence and turns the sentence into a half rhetorical statement. is used when you want to get confirmation or agreement from another person. In English we would use the phrases "isn't it?" or "right?" for this purpose. Take a look at the following examples:

  • きれいだね。
  • It is beautiful, isn't it?
  • このいえひろいですね。
  • This house is spacious, right?

The particle can also be used informally and in negative sentences.

Informally

When is used informally, the sentence does not need to include です or . It can end with by itself:

  • 今日きょうさむいね。
  • It's cold today, isn't it?

Negative

  • ひろくないですね。
  • It is not spacious, right?

The よ particle

The particle also comes at the end of a sentence and is used to add emphasis to the sentence. In English we would use the phrases "I tell you" or "you know".

The particle is used in the following situations:

  • The speaker seeks to tell new information to the listener
  • The speaker seeks to change the listener's understanding of something.

You can see this in action in the following examples:

Q: When is your birthday?

  • A: 先月せんげつでしたよ。
  • It was last month.

Q: What drink is that?

  • A: コーヒーですよ。
  • It is coffee.

Q: Your dog is a boy, right?

  • A: いいえ、おんなですよ。
  • No, she is a girl.

Using ね and よ together

The and particles can be used together to form よね and it works similarly to the particle.

  • あのひとおんなですよね?
  • That person is a woman, isn't she?
  • さむくないよね?
  • It's not cold, right?
