Location particle に

In the previous lesson we learned how to form basic sentences using います/あります. Now we will learn how to make these sentences a bit more complicated and detailed.

The particle can be used in a lot of ways, but for now we will learn how to use to describe the location of an item. This can be done by placing the particle immediately after a noun to mark that noun as the location. Let's take a look at some examples below which use together with います/あります:

  • 公園こうえん子供こどもがいます。
  • There is a child in the park.
  • アメリカに友人ゆうじんがいます。
  • I have a friend in America.
  • テーブルのうえにカレーがあります。
  • There is curry on the table.
  • やまうえわたし高校こうこうがあります。
  • There is my school on top of the mountain.

When the subject (noun/phrase before the particle) is obvious or already introduced, it can be omitted. For example, when you are asked “Where is your high school?”, it’s obvious that the conversation is about the high school. So you can answer: やまうえにあります which is translated to “There is [the high school] on top of the mountain”. You can further simplify the answer and just say やまうえです which means "The top of the mountain".
