Past tense of です: でした

In previous lessons, we covered how to form sentences with the format of X is Y by using the word です. In this lesson we will cover the past-tense form, でした.

Take a look at the following sentences which use です:

  • 四月しがつです。
  • It is April.
  • あれはつきです。
  • That is the moon.

To make these sentences past-tense, we replace the です with でした:

  • 四月しがつでした。
  • It was in April.
  • あれはつきでした。
  • That was the moon.
でした is used to express something that occurred in the past or to tell someone something that you already know.

The sentences above sound slightly weird without any context but you can say 四月しがつでした when someone asked when the last event was. Or you could say つきでした when you thought you saw a UFO but it was actually the moon.

Note that just like the X is Y sentence structure, the topic can be omitted.

Because でした is the past tense version of です, でした sounds polite as well.
