Negative forms of です: じゃないです

Non-past negative

Continuing our work with です, we will now take a look at the negative form: じゃないです.

Here is a sentence which uses です:

  • これははなです。
  • This is a flower.

To make this sentence negative, we replace the です with じゃないです:

  • これははなじゃないです。
  • This is not a flower.

Alternatives

Besides じゃないです, there are some other alternatives for making sentences with the negative form of です:

じゃありません
  • 千円せんえんじゃありません。
  • It is not one thousand yen.
ではないです
  • これは牛肉ぎゅうにくではないです。
  • This is not beef.
ではありません
  • あなたは学生がくせいではありません。
  • You are not a student.

All four forms are pretty long and hard to remember but we can think of them as two parts: では/じゃ and ありません/ないです. The close translation of では/じゃ is "what has been stated is..." and ありません/ないです is "something is not true". So the parts combined can be translated to "what has been stated is not true" and therefore can be used to negate what comes before the phrase.

Looking at those parts, では is politer than じゃ and ありません is politer than ないです. So the order ではありません, ではないです, じゃありません, じゃないです is the order of the politest to the least polite form of this phrase.

Note that the は in では is actually the topic marker particle は and therefore read as わ.

Past negative

Just as じゃないです is the negative form of です, じゃなかったです is the negative form of でした.

Here is a sentence that uses the past tense form of です, でした:

  • これははなでした。
  • This was a flower.

To make this sentence negative, we replace the でした with じゃなかったです just as we did for じゃないです and です earlier:

  • これははなじゃなかったです。
  • This was not a flower.

Alternatives

Just like じゃないです, there are alternative ways of making sentences with the negative form of でした:

じゃありませんでした
  • 百円ひゃくえんじゃありませんでした。
  • It was not one hundred yen.
ではなかったです
  • これはにくではなかったです。
  • This was not meat.
ではありませんでした
  • あなたは学生がくせいではありませんでした。
  • You were not a student.

Standard forms

です has the following forms which have been covered in this and previous lessons:

  • Past affirmative
  • Past negative
  • Non-past affirmative
  • Non-past negative.

These four forms are very common in Japanese and a lot of other grammatical concepts will change into these four forms as well. There are other forms that certain concepts can change into, but for now just focus on understanding these four.
