The の particle

The particle can be used to connect two nouns or phrases. You can use in the following way: noun 1 + の + noun 2. can be used to modify a noun or show possession. Some examples are shown below:

  • わたしのペン
  • My pen
  • 日本語にほんご先生せんせい
  • Japanese teacher

You can also chain multiple の particles together such as in the following examples:

  • わたし英語えいごほん
  • My English book
  • やまうえはな
  • The flowers on top of the mountain

If you are having trouble understanding multiple particles used together, try and read it from right-to-left. So わたし英語えいごほん would become:

  • ほん : Book
  • 英語えいごほん : English book
  • わたし英語えいごほん : My English book

You can omit the second noun when what it refers to is clear and when the first noun explains the possession.

  • Q: これはあなたのノートですか?
  • Q: Is this your notebook?
  • A: いいえ、ケンのです。(Omitting the second noun ノート from ケンのノート)
  • A: No, it's Ken's.
