Months

We have learned some of the months as vocabulary previously. Here let's revisit all the month.

January一月いちがつ
February二月にがつ
March三月さんがつ
April四月しがつ
May五月ごがつ
June六月ろくがつ
July七月しちがつ
August八月はちがつ
September九月くがつ
October十月じゅうがつ
November十一月じゅういちがつ
December十二月じゅうにがつ

As you can see, the months in Japanese are just the numbers one to twelve plus the kanji for month (). is always pronounced as がつ when used to count months.

One month and two months

When counting months such as one month and two months, the number plus げつ is used. For example, いっげつ is one month and げつ is two months. か月 is sometimes written as カ月, ヶ月, or ヵ月, but all mean the same. is always pronounced as げつ when used to count the number of months.

When talking about a period of time such as in the second example sentences above, it is common to add かん at the end.

  • さんげつかんものきません。
  • I won't go shopping for three months

Day of the month

There is a special way of counting the days in a month, similar to how we have a different counter for different objects. Readings to count days in a month are similar to readings to count general objects. The table below compares the reading of general objects for one to ten and counting for dates in a month.

General objectsDatesReading
1ひとつ一日ついたち
2ふたつ二日ふつか
3みっつ三日みっか
4よっつ四日よっか
5いつつ五日いつか
6むっつ六日むいか
7ななつ七日なのか
8やっつ八日ようか
9ここのつ九日ここのか
10とお十日とおか
20-二十日はつか

The readings in bold are the ones that have different readings than usual. Other dates besides the ones listed above use general ways to count numbers plus the kanji . with the numbers one to ten and twenty is read as as shown above. When used with other numbers, it is read as にち such as 十一日にじゅういちにち, 二十五日にじゅうごにち, and 三十日さんじゅうにち.

  • 20日はつか友達ともだちいえます。
  • My friend will come to my house on the 20th.
  • 四月しがつ三日みっかから留学りゅうがくきます。
  • I will go studying abroad from April the 3rd.

When talking about a number of days, we just use the dates plus かん. For example, three days is 三日間みっかかん and 25 days is 25日間にじゅうごにちかん. 一日 is an exception and when it's used for one day rather than the day one of the month, it is read as いちにち without the かん. 一日:いちにち by itself can mean one day. To say all day long, じゅう which means throughout is often put after 一日いちにち to form the word 一日中いちにちじゅう.

  • 一日中いちにちじゅう会社かいしゃにいました。
  • I was at the office all day long.
  • 三日間みっかかん東京とうきょうきます
  • I will go to Tokyo for three days.
