The と particle

Connecting two nouns

The particle has two uses: connecting two nouns and identifying who you are doing an action with. When the particle takes the noun 1 + と + noun 2structure, it simply means noun 1 and noun 2.

  • 大人おとな子供こども
  • Adults and children
  • はるなつ
  • Spring and summer

The particle can only connect two nouns. It can not be used to connect adjectives, verbs, or clauses.

When listing nouns, an extra can come after the final noun e.g. はるなつ. But over time as Japanese has changed, this is no longer required and including the final is optional.

The と particle can be used to list more than two items and it is implied that the listed items are a complete list. For example, if you say みずとコーヒーとおちゃがあります, it means you have exactly water, coffee and tea and nothing else like juice. As it is repetitive to add と multiple times, sometimes と is omitted on the second one onwards: みずとコーヒー、おちゃがあります.

Identifying who you are doing an action with

When the particle comes after a person, it identifies who you are doing an action with. This translates to the word “with” or “together with” in English.

  • ちちははとタクシーにります。
  • I will take a taxi with my dad and mum
  • 友達ともだち映画館えいがかん映画えいがます。
  • I will watch a movie in the movie theatre with my friend
