There are more characters besides the 46 base katakana characters that we have learned up until now. Just like hiragana, these other characters are represented by adding diacritical marks to the base characters or combining two katakana characters together.

Diacritical marks

ガギグゲゴ

The "k" row of katakana カキクケコ becomes "g" sounds with the diacritical marks.

The "s" row of katakana サシスセソ becomes "z" sounds with the diacritical marks. ジ and ヂ are pronounced the same, and ズ and ヅ are pronounced the same.

The "d" row of katakana タチツテト becomes "d" sounds with the diacritical marks. ジ and ヂ are pronounced the same, and ズ and ヅ are pronounced the same.

Double consonants

A small can be used to represent a double consonant such as kk or pp.

  • キック (kikku) vs きく (kiku)

This does not apply to the double consonant nn which is written with a + a katakana with a n consonant (, , , , ) instead.

  • カンニング (kanningu)

Long vowels

When a vowel is placed after a consonant-vowel pair of the same vowel, the pronunciation becomes longer. For katakana, this is written using .

  • クッキー (kukkii)
  • スカート (sukaato)
